Fall 2018

Dear Friends,

FlowersThanks to Charlotte Fleetwood’s hard work, the Boston Transportation Department (BTD) received a $91,200 DCR Recreational Trails Program grant and is providing a $22,800 match. The funding will pay for biddable plans, specifications and estimates for the Bussey Brook Meadow Arboretum Road Green Link, a new gateway and path for people who live in the Environmental Justice communities east of the commuter rail tracks. When constructed, this link will transform a neglected and trash-strewn tunnel under the commuter rail tracks into an inviting entrance, with signage and attractive lighting under the archway. Beyond the tunnel, a permeable path will connect to the Blackwell Path, the South Street Gate, and the rest of the 284-acre Arnold Arboretum.

The Boston Public Works Department has almost finished safety improvements and a rain garden at the heavily used intersection of South Street and Bussey Street. Governor Baker recently signed Environmental Bond Bill, H4835 that includes $3 million for the construction of the Roslindale Gateway Path. This path segment will connect to the platform of the Roslindale Commuter Rail Station, pass up and over Peters Hill, and continue on to a proposed crosswalk at this same intersection.

The path pieces are coming together. The piece from the Bussey Brook Meadow to the Poplar Gate and Peters Hill still needs funding. Your support has brought us this far: a gift this year will do that much more. We hope we can we count on you again.
