President’s Letter

Fall 2017

Dear Friends,

FlowersThis year, we have worked with the Arboretum, the City of Boston,WalkUp Roslindale/Rozzie Bikes, the Livable Streets Alliance/Emerald Network, and the community on a broadened vision for advancing open space equity in the neighborhoods
adjacent to the Arboretum. We now plan to extend the Blackwell
Footpath to the Roslindale Gateway Path. This unified path system will start at the Roslindale Commuter Rail Station, continue over Peters Hill, and connect with the Blackwell Path Extension and the Forest Hill MBTA Station. Pedestrians and bicyclists will have a new scenic route through the Arboretum to the Southwest Corridor and on to Downtown Boston.

The Solomon Fund has provided a grant for 25% design services for this project. This new curving pathway will be consistent with the character of other pathways in the Arnold Arboretum. It will provide lovely new views to beautiful plantings on Peters Hill such as the stand of Dawn Redwoods. Horsley Witten will have the 25% plan ready for review this November.

We will continue to advocate for this path and search for ways to fund bid documents, permitting and construction. Both Ned Friedman, Director of the Arnold Arboretum and Chris Cook, Commissioner of the Parks and Recreation Department have already given time, effort and great ideas that will help make this path a reality.

We couldn’t begin to contemplate these ambitious plans without the donations we have received from friends like you over the years. We hope we can count on you again this year.
