The Arnold Arboretum is bordered by several distinct communities and neighborhoods, all of which take a special interest in the arboretum and participate in its support and history.
The communities around the arboretum include:
- Jamaica Plain
- Roslindale
- Forest Hills, and
- West Roxbury
all of whom are part of the City of Boston.

Within these communities are the neighborhoods of:
- Longfellow Area Neighborhood
- Asticou-Martinwood Neighborhood
- South Street Neighborhood
- Woodbourne
- Moss Hill / Jamaica Hills, and
- Allandale
Boston's Emerald Necklace is a linear system of parks designed by Frederick Law Olmsted to connect the historic Boston Common to the neighborhoods.  In order they are:

  • Boston Common
  • Public Garden
  • Commonwealth Avenue Mall
  • Back Bay Fens
  • Riverway
  • Olmsted Park
  • Jamaica Pond Park
  • Arnold Arboretum
  • Franklin Park
